What is software optimization?

What does it mean when a developer optimizes their software for a certain platform? Also, what do developers do when they optimize their software (what do they change in it to have it do the same function but run better)?

Hello... "optimization" can cover a lot of things and can be used for "advertising" a product... just like one soap has "more cleaning power" over another.

Different Os's and hardware will have communications between the APP and them... basically we the "users" will suffer from bad written software... it's possible they could of had problems in the past and are trying to convince someone to buy their product again?
