Will gtx 1080 prices go down after vega is released?

Hi,

Since vega is releasing next month I was wondering if I should wait a month to get cheap 1080 or I would have to settle for 1070.

Even if there is a price drop how much max can it go down, the cheapest right now is around $550-ish will it go to $400-450??

The Nvidia 1080 will not go down in price when Vega is released. Some months ago Nvidia became aware of AMD's next generation video card and made an educated guess as to it's performance. Nvidia responded by releasing the GTX 1080 Ti earlier than planned and lowered the price of the 1080 at that time.

So, the price has already been reduced, and Nvidia will not lower it again. There are other factors in the equation, however, none of them will cause Nvidia to further reduce the price of the 1080.

I began my career in the computer field over 30 years ago and have found there are many factors that influence hardware pricing. It is impossible to give you a prediction with 100% certainty about your question, will Nvidia lower the price...

I know that AMD is coming out with several different models in the Vega series and memory counts on HBM2, 8gb, 16gb and a 20gb. I hear rumors (only rumors) board partners are pricing at $400.00 & $500.00+. which models get that pricing I have no idea. The coolers on the Frontier (reference) models are the big differences and not cheap. $1200.00 air cool & $1800.00 water cool.
While waiting 7 months till now for Vega to come out, I blew up my 390x. Had to find a temporary replacement. I discovered the bit miners were scooping up the cheap, 580 8gb cards. So it became a mad rush to find an 580 8gb card. I was days away before they moved the prices up and sold out. I would've bought a 1070 but my monitor is Freesync and I wasn't about to cut loose for Gsync.
There is a shortage of HBM 2 and because of that, AMD is releasing only 16,000 Frontier cards. I don't know if the board partners will suffer through that. If the prices are right when they do come out, I'm not waiting for mining community to make up my mind.

It is impossible to give you a prediction with 100% certainty about your question, will Nvidia lower the price of the 1080 [again], however, the indicators point to a 99.9% probability that Nvidia will not lower the price after Vega is released.

Edit: As to the mini version of the 1080, if you purchase it find one with a good cooler. Without proper cooling the card will throttle if it gets too hot. So, card design is important as is case cooling. The only reason to get a mini is if you have limited room in your computer case. Make sure whatever card you purchase will fit. Some mini 1080s are too large for an Mini-ITX build, however, is should fit Micro ATX. Measure how much room you have.

Also, do your research well because there are other downsides, such as extra noise or coil whine in some models.

Yeah I thought that too, so i went ahead and bought 1080 ti already from newegg!

actually nvidia already drop the price for 1080 when they release 1080ti back in march. will nvidia going to drop further after Vega? we can't say for sure but usually nvidia will try not to make it that they drop their price because of competition. if they dropping the price it should be about giving room for new product to fit in existing price structure. take example GTX1050ti 4GB. during the initial announcement nvidia put the MSRP at $140 which is directly targeting RX460 4GB pricing. then AMD directly cut their 460 and 470 pricing even before the 1050s hit the market. did nvidia adjust their price to respond with AMD price cut? no. and there is still issue with board partner. take asus for example. they still priced their 1050ti strix at $180 despite base MSRP for RX470 has been drop down to $170. nvidia probably can drop their price further to compete better with AMD price wise but board partner probably will not going to like it.
