so i have a really old pre buit pc, and im really just trying to keep it alive until i have enough money to build myself one. the pc i have is a gateway dx4840-11c. this pc is carrying a i3 550 lga 1156. i have found a cheap used i7. can i replace the i3 with the i7. would there be any issues with this? would it be compatable with my mobo/bios. i read some where that the bios on prebuilts tend to be locked down. my pc is so bad that i can only open one program at a time. if i do try to use more than one program at a time it just begins to stutter.

Solution

i figured it out and up dated my bios...

What exactly you you mean when you say nothing is working? If you are trying to use the I7, and your current BIOS won't support it, then you also can't use it to flash your BIOS to a new version. You cannot update the BIOS without a CPU installed, and it HAS to be a supported one, not one that the BIOS flash would give support for..

i figured it out and up dated my bios everything is working fine now, nice and stable. The cpu i have right now is i3 550 (2 cores 2 threads).
i lost out on the i7. but i found an i5-760 (4 cores 4 threads). i can get this cpu for 50 bucks.
tell what do you think about it. they are both 1156 cpus. for 50 buck i dont think i could go wrong. if the i5 is a bad choice can you give me some suggestions. dont want to spend ton of money i hope the i5 will work our fine. my mobo carries H57 chipset and both the i3 and i5 and compatable with the chipest.
