I've had this problem for about half a year now, and I'm still looking for a solution. My PC likes to freeze up (Keyboard stops responding, no sound, display frozen) after a bit of gaming (exempt light games such as minecraft, hoi4).

I've done a lot of testing and I've come to a conclusion that it is *probably* not.

1. Temperature related: CPU/GPU all never go to levels that would even indicate worry.

2. GPU: The GPU is fairly new, a GTX 1060 3gb edition. I've run CPU, and Memory test and my computer still crashes in both (GPU isn't be stressed there) so it isn't the GPU.

3. Memory: I've tested the memory on different slots, and the both sticks on their own. I haven't tried using memory other than those two sticks although. So not 100% here.

~ Specs ~

Mobo: ASUS ROG Crosshair Formula-Z 990FX
CPU: AMD FX 9590 4.7 Ghz - 8 Core/16 Threads
GPU: GTX 1060 3GB
Memory: 2 Sticks of DDR3 2400MHz - AMD Radeon Memory
PSU: Ultra X4 600W ATX Power Supply 80 PLUS

I'm using a Hard Disc Drive I think, 1 Teraflop.

I'm starting to think it's either the CPU/MOBO. Although I'm not sure, is there anything else I should try to do? Try to look at? Should I look at just going out and buying a new Ryzen CPU and new Mobo? Running out of ideas.

Well, guess we'll never know. Lol. The one Skytoucher mentioned is a very reputable brand. I've owned the same...
So, you put there this CPU aka space heater and expect it to be stable? I would say your expectations are unreal. You didn't mention but I guess you have water cooling to keep CPU at good temp - but that means your motherboard cooling is not as good as could be.
Just save yourself more trouble and move on to Ryzen.

What program do you use to measure the temperature of your CPU? Is it AMD OverDrive or another one such as CPU-Z or HardwareMonitor? AMD measures the temperatures of their CPUs in a different way compared to Intel, so OverDrive will provide more accurate figures. If it's still not overheating, then it could be a software issue. When was the last time you reinstalled Windows? Do you have a lot of background processes running? Any software issues that you can think of off the top of your mind? Perhaps you have a problem with malware?

I use OverDrive and MSI Afterburner to monitor the CPU Temps. I highly doubt it's malware, or something software related. This is definitely a hardware problem, no software errors or anything of that nature. Just freezing up as in, caps lock stops working, inputs don't work, display freezes, all that jazz.

Like I said in the post, temps aren't the issue here. My temps are actually decent considering the CPU. Yes it's water cooled, but no it doesn't act as a space heater. It's temps are pretty decent actually.

I have been doing more testing though lately. I was thinking that maybe it wasn't temperature but I think it has to do with it somewhat. This is obviously a stability problem. Using AMD Overdrive, while playing Fallout 4. My CPU Temps slowly continually fell through the temperature margins. After about 10 to 15 minutes it was about -5 in the temperature margins, which I think would put it about to 78 degrees? Anyways once it did it stayed at the point, going a tad lower before my computer would then hang again.

So maybe the CPU temperature is the cause of it, or just part of it. Reason I'm not 100% here though is because, it's crashed before when the CPU wasn't as hot, but still pretty warm.

Either way though, I do need a new Mobo/CPU anyways. Just money restraints right now tbh.

When you exceed the thermal margin and go in the negatives it starts throttling your CPU in order to cool it off, so it's probably that. I am somewhat surprised that it's still overheating even with a water cooler though...

Except it doesn't throttle whats so ever, it stays at a stable 4.7 GHz. Also oddly enough, while using Paint.net my PC hanged again, which is odd because my CPU was only being used at 10% about. So I'm really not sure what the problem is here, maybe it's the mobo? Also earlier today, my computer turned off while I was watching a movie, like just all of a sudden turned off. I tried to turn it back on but after a second or two it would just turn right back off so, I gave it a bit of time and now it's working.

So the whole thing is confusing me..

Oh wow! Good thinking actually! I'm gonna try swapping out the psu with another one. My problems started actually when I got a new psu.... If it solves it, I'll let you know definitely!

Did it work because I'm having very similar problems and I was wondering if a power supply could be a cause?

I had a similar issue with an fx 8350 that almost drove me crazy, and it turned out to be the PCI wifi card, TPLink brand. Unplugged it and never froze again.

Well, guess we'll never know. Lol. The one Skytoucher mentioned is a very reputable brand. I've owned the same model and a few other SeaSonic PSUs. I'm currently using an EVGA G2 850w. It's good but I think SeaSonic X is the better model.

It didn't :< I believe it was the CPU/MOBO; not sure- I have a laptop rn though, as my dad was able to hook one up from a friend. PC is now sitting in my closest, awaiting for a new MOBO/CPU

Now that we've gone thru some of the problems with hardware, let's try a look at the driver issues.
-Corrupt software is progressive and keeps getting worse with each use. For Windows 7 (it may be the same for Windows 10), try this.
-Run the 'Error Checker' in C: drive. Go to My Computer> right click C: drive> Click 'Properties' button in the window down below> click Tools> click 'Check Now' button. Let it run. Throughout the path getting to the Error Checker, there are other tools you should use to, like the 'Clean Up' tool. and 'Defragmentation' tool.
-Uninstall and reinstall the games. When installed, click 'reset' or 'default settings'. Make sure you write down your game settings as they will be gone and you will need to reprogram them.
-Steam and other game servers like to remember your settings as a courtesy if you choose to uninstall or reinstall a game or haven't played the games for a while. Online games servers sometimes remember crashes like a game setting. Try resetting the games to 'Default Settings' or 'Reset'.
-Uninstall the GPU driver completely. Using the Windows uninstaller located in 'Programs and Features', uninstall the gpu driver. Reinstall the last known good gpu driver. Why you want to do this is gpu drivers sometimes get fractured in the registry path and remain unseen. The removal process or installing one gpu driver without removing the old one completely confuses the computer and crashes it.
Often, with drivers, the new one gets written over the old one without removing it. Wisdom with PC computers, remove the old drivers completely before installing a new one.
-If the old gpu driver is fractured in the registry path, you need to dig it out. Since it isn't always visible anywhere to remove, the best way to clean it out is to reinstall the old driver, use the Window uninstaller in 'Programs and Features', then install the new driver. It's easier than going into the registry to dig them out manually and risk messing up the registry that way.
Sometimes the Windows uninstaller doesn't completely remove the gpu driver so downloading a driver remover tool like Ccleaner, 'Your Uninstaller' is necessary. Or go to Nvidia for uninstalling and installing the new gpu driver. Some of these tools are free to use or 30 day trial.
-Reseat your connections. Unplug and plug them back in a few times to clean off the connections.
-Check your cables. make sure they work by switching them.
Hope this helps.
