Changing Public IP Address

Hi there,
I've been trying to change my IP address for a while. I've done so much looking online, and still using all the tips people have given I can't seem to change it.

So far I've tried:
  • Unplugging my router
    Resetting my router
    Restarting my computer
    Command Prompt ipconfig /release + /renew
    Looking around my router gateway
I can't seem to get it to change at all. I'm pretty sure its a dynamic IP (judging from what I've read online, but if there's a way to know for sure let me know), and I still can't get it to change.

Also, VPNs and proxies don't work well for me, or I would just use those.

Xfinity is my ISP, so it's probably just something weird they do. On the gateway, there's an option to use bridge mode, which I guess would just allow me to use a separate modem that's connected to the Xfinity router as my main router (again, just read that online).

If there's any other info you might need from me, just let me know and I'll get that to you.

Thanks!

Your ISP controls your public IP address. Like Max said unless you are paying for a static (business account) IP you don't have control over it. However it may eventually rotate to a new IP address on its own, general consumer accounts don't get static address so they get swapped around as demand requires.

You could if you want get a VPN, this would give you other IP address to use.

So doing all of those little tricks on the internet just change your private IP?

From the list of things in your first post, the only one that might work is:
"Unplugging my router"

But...you may have to leave it off for a week or two.
I'm guessing you won't want to do that.
And it still might get you the same IP address.

With my very weak understanding of this stuff, I'm guessing that has to do with DHCP Lease time, right? So, if I set the DHCP lease time to 5 min, instead of the current setting at 1 week, would that allow me to unplug my router for 5 min and possibly get a new IP?

Thanks.

Have you tried changing your MAC address? Another thought would be to bring up 2 PCs on the connection.

No.
The DHCP lease time in your router is for your internal devices...the IP addresses it gives out.

Your public IP address lease time is controlled by your ISP.

MAC address? On what, the PC?
Again...that has nothing to do with the public IP address.

Change the MAC address of the router? This may involve a phone call to the ISP to get this "new" device authorized on their network.

Yeah, I'd much rather just call them and ask for them to change my IP.

There's a couple reasons. I used to use Skype a lot, until I realized how easy it is to get IPs through Skype. I had some friends who got my IPs off Skype, and used to DDoS me as a "joke". Once I let them know that I was pretty uncool with it, they stopped. Even though it's been a while, I still don't like knowing they have my IP. I don't think my IP has ever changed since I got my router over a year ago.

The same people also used to use my IP to get me banned off a few video servers, and the owners of the servers refuse to unban me :/.

If it was a huge issue to me, I would've just called my ISP by now. I just thought there might be some other, easier way of doing this, but if not then there isn't really a point.

If it is actual harassment, and you have this documented, absolutely call your ISP.
They may change it.

Of course, this is sort of like the Witness Protection Program.
You can't go back to the same game servers and Skype, and mess around with the same people. They'd just do it again.

Your IP address is kind of like your house address. Anyone that cares can discover it.
That's why they call it "public". It is how servers know your address to send stuff to. Like the mailman.

It's been a few months since anything has happened, so I'm not going to bother with it. I just removed pretty much everyone from my Skype and have moved on to better programs such as Discord. I would use a VPN for the game servers, except most of the free ones don't bypass the server's AntiVPN and I don't care about it enough to go pay for a quality VPN. Kinda sucks that it is so easy to get IPs, but I don't care about it enough to use a VPN for every single site I visit.

If you are running a firewall behind the ISPs modem, check to see if you are getting a public IP address on the WAN interface. A public IP address would be anything BUT 10.x.x.x or 172.16.x.x or 192.168.x.x "Yes I know there is more to the 172.16 address space" and if you are getting a public IP address on the WAN side, look to see if the firewall will allow you to change the MAC address. On Linksys, they call it MAC Address cloning. You should have a firewall besides the Comcast modem. Good luck.
