Hi guys, I recently upgraded my ram. I am a beginner in terms of computer understanding so please explain a story much as you can!

Old: 2x4gb GSkill F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL

New: 2x8 gb Kingston HX318C10FBK2/16

Both of which were purchased as sets.

Whenever I try and run the 8gb ram as either a single or dual stick config, get a boot loop. However, if I leave one of 4GB sticks in, I am able to load to bios and windows. The BIOS also recognises the 8gb ram when I do this (yielding a total of 12gb).

What's going wrong? I did try and manually set the timings for the 8gb ram in one slot, and boot it up with the single stick- which worked once. But after that I tried to boot it again with the two sticks, which didn't work- then once more with the single 8gb stick- which didn't work again! Putting me back to square one.

When the 4GB and 8gb sticks are combined, CPU-Z shows the speed for both at 800mhz

Other details are as follows:

Mobo: gigabyte z68x-ud3h-b3
CPU: i7 2600k

Never flashed the bios as I have never been in a position where I needed to and felt as if I didn't have the knowledge to do it safely.
Thanks a heap guys

Solution
Sounds like a typical issue of mixed memory kits.

Does the 16gb kit work fine on it's own? If so i would stick to just using that.

Try loading BIOS defaults.

Hey mate, it doesn't work if I load just using the 16gb aswell. I just put 1x8gb stick and 1x4gb stick in to try and assist with loading to BIOS. Also, even though it identifies all 12gb of ram in task manager, it says only 8.6gb of which is usable if that helps.

I'll try that and see if it helps.

Hmm didn't work. Just went into a series of boot loops. So I just kept one 8gb stick in and replaced the other stick with one of the 4GB sticks and was able to boot back into windows (it did boot loop once before doing so).

I'll try manually resetting the speeds and timings for one of the lanes and see if I can get a safe boot with one of the new 8gb sticks, that way I've the other lane on default settings so I can always safely boot with another 4GB stick until I get this sorted.

Keep the suggestions coming guys! No idea what I'm doing there, really just winging it with some data I have on both of the brands!

Update: the following message appears in my bios when I manage to get in after a boot loop.

"The system has experienced boot failures because of overclocking or changes of voltages. Last settings in this page may not coincide with current H/W statistics."

Odd, both of the RAM brands are rated for 1.5v, not sure what changes there
