It is has been a while since I built a system, but as I recall there was always an "X" shaped piece of metal that went under the MB that the CPU cooler mounted to in order to reduce the amount of stress to the MB. This time there is nothing with the stock i5-7600 and cooler or with the Asus B250M-C MB. There is also no mention of the need for one in either set of directions. I would assume then that it is OK to mount the cooler directly to the MB but a confirmation of that sure would be nice. Thanks.

Solution
if you are using the heatsink that came with the i5, it goes mounted as described in the manual that comes n the box

the x you mention is often used fot heavier heatsinks, the one on the box is very light

Thank you both for the quick reply. Waiting for an answer was holding up the build process. :)

As I recall it was a add-on cooler that had that extra support. This is will be a non gaming or run of the mill PC so I am not concerned about a 100% duty cycle so I am going with the standard cooler. At least until I find that one is warranted.

Thanks again.
