I have an old Dell XPS L501X laptop sitting around doing a whole bunch of nothing at the moment. Additionally, I have a media server running freeNAS on an ooooooold Intel Core 2 Duo cpu. For the most part, this server works fine. It steams music and movies where I need to. Ultimately I'm looking to upgrade the server a bit. I want some more SATA slots on the motherboard, the current one only has 4. But if I'm going to upgrade the mobo, I don't want to use that tired old CPU. So the laptop has a core i7 I am hoping to use, but it looks like its a socket G1 (PGA988). Are there any motherboards out there that even support this socket type any more? Is my i7 compatible with any other socket types? Or is this laptop bound for the scap yard?

New motherboards won't support that socket. Socket G1 was for mobile platforms, so you will only see it on laptops. As for upgrading that motherboard, if you have free pci/pcie slots you can get SATA controller cards/raid cards and use those for extra slots. The Core 2 Duo should be perfectly fine for freeNAS, and if it is too weak, i would recommend getting a Core 2 Quad Q6600 or a Xeon (IF your motherboard can support it)

As for socket G1, it's for first gen Intel Mobile processors. You will likely not be able to find a desktop motherboard for it. If it were me, I would not recycle that laptop because it probably is still pretty good for basic tasks, but just don't hope to run games at 100FPS on it unless it is an old game.
