My system, Intel i4670K on ASUS Z87-A motherboard using on board video, has been working fine for several years (stock cooling fan, never OCed). Today, having made no changes recently, the system won't turn on. Specifically, when I try to turn it on, the power lights come on for a fraction of a second (.5 seconds, maybe up to 1 second) and then everything shuts off. No beeps at any point. To get it to do it again, I have to unplug the power cord or turn off the power supply (i.e. without doing either of these, nothing happens when I try to turn it on a second time). Thinking it was the power supply, I swapped in a new power supply. But I have the same symptoms with the new power supply. In testing I noticed that if I unplug the 8-pin CPU power plug on the MB, the system will stay "on" (the fans keep running, etc.) although obviously it doesn't boot. I'm not too familiar with what all that connector does and whether than suggests a MB or processor problem, or is a false lead? Unfortunately, I do not have a spare MB or processor, so I have to purchase whatever the next troubleshooting step is. Anybody seen this before, or have other troubleshooting suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Solution
Disconnecting the 8-pin CPU cable is like removing the CPU; it doesn't help to identify where the issue is. It could be the motherboard, but did you test with only the CPU and one memory module installed (nothing else connected, i.e., no keyboard, mouse, HDD, SSD, etc.)? You can try another module if it doesn't stay powered up because a bad memory module could cause that issue. If it still doesn't work, test the same minimal configuration outside of the case.
