Hello,

I have a ASUS P7P55-M and im trying to run a MSI GTX 980 GPU. is my mobo good enough for this GPU?

Solution
Ha. YEah, valuable lesson there. What you essentially saw was the 'cooler' or series.. Those same coolers can apply to all kinds of GPUs (both nVidia and AMD).

For example, with some variations in length and actual functionality etc, the same looking cooler is on

a PCIe Gen2 x16 - yes, it should run just fine. There's a slim chance of BIOS issues with newer cards, but I'm 99% sure that board will be fine.

As for the system overall, what CPU do you have in there/plan to pair with a 980? Anything on the lower end (<i5) will probably be a pretty noticeable bottleneck. The higher end (i5 or >) should be relatively ok, but most chips are likely going to need an OC to keep up with a 980.

Thanks for the fast reply! I have this GPU installed in the mobo already and its showing display, but its not showing up in device manager. I have done a clean install of win 7 64bit and have updated the BIOS to the latest, (which was like 2012 release date). I have a Intel i5 650 3.2GHz and 8gb of ram and a thermaltake TR2 600W PSU. I have tried everything to get this GPU to work, but the only thing showing up under display adapters is the default VGA adapter. I am starting to think something isnt supported on my build causing it to not show up, but i am an amateur when it comes to these things!

Yes I am plugged in the DVI on the GTX 980, confirmed. I have tried to install the drivers from nvidias website and when it runs the installer it errors saying not compatible graphics card present. I was going to manually install the drivers but I dont know how to do that if the device is not listed anywhere under device manager. I have looked under other devices in their and i have set the view to view hidden devices. Still nothing. I have also run some other programs like DDU to clear out other drivers and drive easy to try and see if it finds the GPU, but it doesn't.

ok...So this has been a valuable lesson to me. Dont assume you know something. I will tell the what happend so you can laugh at me. In the past, I helped my dad install dual GTX 980 MSI eddition GPU's in his custome build. I acquired this GPU from a friend at work, and it looked IDENTICLE to the GPU's I installed in my dads build. I ASSUMED all this time that they were the same card, until you asked me the question above, which made me feel so stupid and ignorant. I looked at the card, very closely, and BOOM! a sticker says Radeon RX 480 Gaming X 8G. I just downloaded the drivers and it appears all is well. Im very sorry for wasting your time, but in my defense, they do look pretty dang close appearance wise right? I hope you get a badge for helping a noob out on this one!
