I7 4790k or I7 7700k + New Mobo

Hey,

I currently have an i5 4670k with a Gigabyte G1 Sniper B5 mobo that somehow only allows for a single channel ram config (using 16gb 1600mhz DDR3). My graphics card is a GTX 1070.

I am looking to upgrade my cpu for gaming, rendering video and (streaming) audio production.

My question is; should I keep my mobo and upgrade to an i7 4790k, or buy a new mobo with a i7 7700k?

Money is not an issue, just want to know if the Kaby lake i7 will offer a big performance improvement over the i7 4790k.

While "money is not an issue"... that's what it's going to boil down to.

KabyLake is an improvement, but not huge improvements. Depending on the specific task, you're talking in the ~10% range improvements.

PErsonally, I'd just opt for a 4790k and recoup a good portion of my outlay from selling the 4670k.

FWIW, the single channel probably stems from populating the incorrect slots.
The board is capable of dual channel (Assuming you have 2x8GB?)
As per the manual:

For optimum performance, when enabling Dual Channel mode with two memory modules,
we recommend that you install them in the DDR3_1 and DDR3_2 sockets.

this would be the case if you're assuming the OP is not mixing and matching DIMMS

Thanks for your answers guys, I have tried everything regarding the dual channel setup, but I am pretty sure two of my ram slots are dead.

How many years do you think the i7 4790k will be sufficient for gaming, streaming, rendering and producing music? In other words, how much more future-proof would a Kaby lake chip be?

It's impossible to say.

My $0.02 though...... I can't see a 4 core / 8 thread @ 4.2-4.5GHz stock (i7-7700K) outlasting a 4 core / 8 thread @ 4.0-4.4GHz stock (i7-4790k) by very long, if at all.

DDR3 vs DDR4 might be more of a valid argument, but I wouldn't put much weight behind it at all.
