Why are m.2 ssds advertised as using SATA?

Solution
because the m.2 size factor can use either PCIe or SATA. The SATA ones are pointless as they are no better than a normal SATA SSD drive.
If you look underneath the label of the WD Blue PC SSD M.2 2280 500GB you'll see this:

SATA3. The limitation is the SATA controller chip and an inefficient AHCI protocol.

On a Samsung NVMe SSD 960 EVO M.2 PCIe for example, that uses Samsung's own Polaris NVMe controller and four PCIe 3.x lanes, you'll get the extremely high sequential Read/Write speeds.

NVMe = NVMHCI (Non-Volatile Memory Host Controller Interface) protocol in combination with four PCIe 3.0 lanes
