New processor advice?

I'm building a new higher-end gaming computer and I'm wondering if I should get an i7 or an AMD 'equivalent'? Also, what are the best AMD competitors to the latest i7s?

It depends. Do you plan on doing anything while you game (say like game streaming, surf the web for/watch video walk-throughs, host a chat server, etc)? If yes I would go with an AMD equivalent. They perform better as a whole. Gaming be the one exception but even in gaming the difference is fairly small @1080P and nearly non-existant at 4K. As for which AMD chip that is a debate. The best bang for the buck is their 6C/12T solutions though going with 8C/16T gives you a little more future proofing and CPU resources to work with. However if you plan on no multitasking like game streaming and strictly want the best FPS today (things may change in a years time or not) then an i7 is the better solution.
