I understand that I need ram that is DDR3 and at those speeds, but at 1600 and 1866 it says I need to overclock the ram to get those speeds.

1. I am wondering if I get ram at 1600, will overclocking in BIOS damage any of my components or just reach the full potential of the ram?

2. Can I run ram at 1600 at lower speeds (1333) due to the better timings associated with the better ram without any problems?

My motherboard has 2 slots available so 2 sticks of 8gb is ideal for me. I had some ram in mind:

    ■ RAM overclocking is a funny thing as by definition any DDR3 RAM that runs above the JEDEC standard of 1333MHz with a maximum voltage of 1.575 volts (read 1.5 volts) is being overclocked. But manufacturers sell 1600/1866/2133 DRR3 all the time. What this means is that when they list the speed above 1333MHz that they have tested and guarantee the RAM to work at the overclocked settings listed by the manufacturer. In the first link you will see that this RAM was tested at 1600MHz at a voltage of 1.5 volts with timings of 10-10-10-30-2N. The second was tested at 1866MHz at 1.5 volts with timings of 10-11-10-30-2N. The quality of the chips used in this RAM is such that they are able to achieve the higher...

And it is over-voltage that could damage components although you really have to up the voltage to get into the damage region. The RAM will likely blow before anything else. At 1.5 volts you are absolutely safe, this is the JEDEC standard voltage. Many manufacturers supply RAM with XMP profiles running at 1.65v without any concern of damage. Here they overcome the inherent instabilities in the chips by using a higher voltage to achieve greater performance. Long winded explanation but I hope it is clear.

    https://www.gskill.com/en/product/f3-14900cl10d-16gbxl■ Yes, you can downclock the speed and lower the timings but again you will reach a limit where to lower the timings more requires more voltage.■ I would go with the 1866MHz sticks and just select the XMP profile in your BIOS, no need to play with the timings.
