Hello,
I recently got a roommate who is an expert in network security and is a foreigner. My cousin who is a bit paranoid told me that he could basically reset my router password and steal the passwords I use for financial websites etc. And if he leaves the nation after that there is no way to recover any money.
Given that almost all banks use HTTPS can a person having access to your router get my password? Since this is a pretty common situation with roommates etc. how do people work around this problem?

Well first off, make sure you only have access to the phyiscal router. If he has access to it, he could easily reset it, change the admin password, and has full control over the network. Then he could monitor anything while on the network. It's true, most sites uses encrypted HTTPS, but he could easily plant a keylogger on your computer and actually get your password. It's not that hard once you are already on the same network. Turn off network sharing and discovery, so no one can get into your computer. Hopefully, you don't have other devices that need to communicate with each other.

So the only true thing to do is lock down the router to where only YOU can get access to it. It also helps if you have a dual-band router. That way, you...

So the only true thing to do is lock down the router to where only YOU can get access to it. It also helps if you have a dual-band router. That way, you can put him on the 2.4ghz network, while you are on the 5ghz network. That way, you are on two different networks.

Of course, all of this fails if this is his router. Worst case, get a cheap second router.
