I plan on buying Asus ROG MAXIMUS VIII RANGER Intel Z170 and i7 7700k. Also i have a corsair h100v2 liquid cooler.
My question is how well is this motherboard for overclocking i7 7700k? Or is there any other reccomendations for motherboards? I want a cheap but good motherboard potentially hitting 5ghz overclocks

I don't think it is really worth it to pay the extra 50 - 100 for a z270 vs a z170 as long as you can update the bios without the CPU. The only feature that the z270 has is optane memory support which is useless unless you are booting from a hdd. I would assume with the money you are spending on this system you will be booting from an SSD.

The z270's do not overclock any better than the z170's. They just have a few more features. Most midrange motherboards will overclock just as good as the more expensive counterparts. There is a lot of luck with overclocking, it really depends on the silicon lottery. I have a gigabyte z170 gaming 7 with a 7700k and I hit a stable 5ghz at 1.3 volts and max temps at 75. If you focus is on...

This motherboard allows BIOS update without CPU at all.

Cool, then there is your answer. I would roll with the ASUS Maximus VIII. You will be able to get a 5ghz overclock on the 7700k. They overclock pretty good. Mine clocks at 5ghz with 1.32 volts with max temps around 75C.

Or is it worth it to go that extra 50 to 100 dollars for a z270? Im mostly worried about overclocking potentials. I dont wanna buy the asus ranger if its gonna weigh down my overclock. And last question to add would a good motherboard affect temperatures much?
