On June 9, 2017 I used Quicken Home & Business 2015 as usual, downloaded banking info, paid bills via bank, entered expenses, backed up , saved to external hard drives (2), logged off bank, Quicken, moved on. On July 14 I attempted to do the same thing I have done for 25 years 3x's a week. My entire Quicken software is gone- the bank cannot download banking info. there's no where to put it, I cannot open quicken program, it clicks, hangs and goes away, I cannot find it on my C drive - it's there but will not engage , like a car's engine that clicks but won't turn over. I downloaded a patch and it installed for June 2017 but it too disappeared. To where ? I don't know. I've done 20 virus and malware scans both Norton and MS. NO virus' nor malware. I even reinstalled my old Quicken CD and updated it. Went smoothly. Can't engage it. Why ?Sick to my stomach have tried to find my work , 25 years of self employed. hard work-vanished. How is that possible ?

Solution
Depending on the problem , there can be several things happeneing to your system.

A) hard Drive getting 'bad block' errors on the 'allocation tables' ,where the HDD keeps the index records of the file names.

B) A Virus infection, that is keeping certain files, and preventing the proper operation from happening.

YOu have mentioned that you have 'backup' files of your quicken data. Are they on a physically different drive? If it was to a different folder on the same drive, then they (the backups) could also be suspect of corruption.

Do not give up on the possible fix.

You mentioned that you downloaded a 'patch'. Was this from Quicken? or Windows?

I have a suspiscion about both or either files are the source of the problem.

Check...

In addition to 3x's week minimum on C, I've backed it up to G:drive, (Seagate) and H:drive (thumbdrive). I also subscribe to Norton OLBU. I can "see" some of my very older files but I cannot access thm because the Quicken Program has disappeared - I can see huge backups and when I click on or type in file strings in different drives, it seems that I'm making progress, shew! , then nothing. I go nowhere. I've tried to reload the disk several times in D:drive. Yay. I click, Nothing.
I went into my backed up Financial Files in Norton, didn't open them just grateful that they were still there. i copied/downloaded the most recent ones pre-Amazon fake email to my hard-drive and shortcut to desktop --success- or so I thought until I later on I found error messages on desktop generated by Norton, "unsuccessful".
P.S. I don't know why all those smiley faces are there and I tried again using your suggestion which takes me to where I was going in my searches. Same thing, click, circling, nothing. then right click, open with ...quicken or quicken windows whatever that is, circling, then , nothing. Qw folder is there, but I cannot access it. I think I've been hacked.

I don't remember the exact date, it was between then and the day I wrote. I cannot even remember the patch but it keeps showing up, annoyingly so, as if I've never downloaded anything else Quicken before.

Not sure where to go if you cannot open your backup files to see the most recent .qdf files. Getting the application is a non-issue, just pay the $75 or so for the newest version or call Intuit and plead for a free download of the version you had.

Are the backups in a compressed format? Not a file and folder backup?

I thought about upgrading to Q.2017 but the complaints from other Users are unending. I'm on the Quicken Help email list and every day I have at least 25 complaints from users about 2017 versions. I also check Amazon for prices and everyone there seems to have unending problems as well - it rates 50% on the happy scale. Also, it won't be $75 for me, it will be twi$ce that for the Home & Business Edition and I was informed that if I downgrade to Delux or Premier or whatever I'll lose access to 20+ years of Quicken Business history. In the meantime, I've been trying everything to address these issues, seeing if it's a corrupted registry, malware, ransomware, virus, prior to that I restored to an earlier date in June. I hand't mentioned or perhaps I have, too tired to check, that my main email account is also screwed up. AND I've been getting constant error messages about my D:Drive being too low on Memory so I worked on that following Windows instructions hoping that if I removed any superflous files which I possibly stored on it by mistake, maybe that's all I'd need to fix things. Nope. Why ? Bc I I have been removing old Restore Dates backups all along which I now regret- Thanks to MS for that horrid advice- I did learn how to view what's on that partition, that's a plus and I did a cleanout of absolutely nothing because there was nothing stored that shouldb't have been. Re: my own backups , I backup my precious files in 3 places: NOLBU, & 2 external Hard drives. No I don't compress the files, why bother ? But I have asted an entire weekend (a month if truth be told) on this, I've worked around PC's long enough to know what to do. I've accomplished nothing other than *finally* received an Error message from my Quicken Install Disk from C: drive= Quicken has stopped working, go on line to get help". I'm swearing right now....it links to no online help. I really don't need a Free download of the Version I have as I have the disk so calling Intuit will only make things worse as it will cause the inevitible heart attack from frustration when I reach a 16 year old foreigner. It's one of two things at this poing : The PC was built in 2009, I was told by HP it was new on 8/2012 ; being that it's 2017 and the model was sold knowing that it had a "bad motherboard" I assume that my harddrive could be dying. there are other issues, freezes, I can't retrieve my Office Outlook email from my main email account- error says the server doesn't recognize my login creds.... Yet it retrieves Outlook email for the sub-email accounts - which makes *absolutely* no sense, it's the same damn server . Which then makes me think , once again, that I've been hacked. I have two choices: throw this thing out the window and upgrade to a new, not HP PC w/the no money in my bank; or perform a 4th factory restore with fingers crossed.

Check the hardware for faults with the HDD, by viewing the 'properties' tab on the C: drive.

(oh and PS add a space between C: and drive, the bulleting board software interprets colon (anything) as emotion characters, :) ... see :d what happens :D with the colon drive (word) :-; ...
