I've been looking around on ebay for the gtx 970 reference card so i can have it sli in my system but the thing is I cant find one! I got my first nvidia gtx 970 reference card for only 180 bucks but 8 months later, i cannot find a single card like this for under 300 $. every other custom card is really cheap besides this one. Why?

It might have been a limited production model from Nvidia and is no longer in production with the advent of the 10 series cards now.
The fact that the crypto miners are after high end cards (mostly AMD) might have something to do with the scarcity and the spike in cost. I've noticed AMD cards are either non-existent or 2-3 times their retail value. I suspect Nvidia is beginning to be their 2nd choice as a result.

i believe nvidia did not make many 970 with reference cooler to begin with (back with GTX770 for example nvidia outright admit that 770 with NVTTM will be cooler will be very limited in number because of the cost of said cooler). so i think you got your first 970 for $180 is quite lucky. why not try looking for board partner 970 with blower cooler? sure it does not look as sexy as nvidia NVTTM but performance wise (cooling) it should be the same.
