So I've been using a Thermaltake Challenger Pro keyboard for about two years across Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 with no problems up until July the 1st, 2017. After a regular day, I turned my PC on as usual, and my keyboard didn't light up or function at all. I got a Windows alert saying "unknown USB device". According to the device manager: "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)". The Thermaltake keyboard software told me to plug in a device. I tried restarting, then tried different USB ports, then tried other machines, reinstalled drivers (both on disc and downloaded from the official Thermaltake site), and none of these fixed it. After messing with the drivers, I plugged it back in to my Surface, and to my surprise, it lit up and functioned again. From that point on I got this problem about once every two to three days. Every occurrence, apart from the last two, I have fixed it by simply plugging it into my Surface. The last two required major driver [CENSORED] and many restarts until I fixed it through trial and error.

Questions: Is it possible to stop this from happening? Is there a permanent fix? Is my keyboard dying? Is it Windows updates?

To fix the last two occurrences I believe I:
1. Uninstalled the drivers
2. Shut down
3. Unplugged the keyboard
4. Turned PC on
5. Installed disc driver then downloaded driver
6. Didn't restart when it asked me to
7. Plugged keyboard back in
8. It worked
