GTX 570 - Fan Speed above 85 %?

Hi.

I set up a custom profile for my fan speed in MSI Afterburner since I have issues with overheating. The problem: The maximum fan speed is locked to 85 %, and it won't go above that even when I tell it to.

I read online that this maximum fan speed can be changed / unlocked / removed somehow, but wherever I go, I can't find any actual download links for anything.

Hope you can help me.
My GPU is always tiptoeing around the 98 to 100 °C area when I play stuff like Final Fantasy XIV, and sometimes I'll hit the 105 °C shutdown point and crash, but the fan won't go faster to prevent it.

Results are in!

Extensively cleaned the CPU, its heat sink, and the GPU, and applied new thermal paste to both (Arctic MX-4).

Previous temperatures:
Idling: CPU ~45 °C / GPU ~55 °C
Gaming: CPU ~70 °C / GPU ~100 °C (occasional 105 °C emergency shutdown)

Temperatures after fixing this kwap:
Idling: CPU ~39 °C / GPU ~39 °C
Gaming: CPU ~57 °C / GPU ~69 °C (never over 70 °C)

So yup!
Runs like a charm now.

Thanks for your help!

Thermal paste? I'd have to screw open the entire GPU casing for that.
... actually, not sure if I even CAN do that.

Where and how would I apply thermal paste here?

Most models you can take off the aftermarket cooling and replace the thermal paste which should lower it at least a few degrees. What software are you using for the fan?

Posted an image of my GPU above, by the way.

But yeah, I first used MSI Afterburner.
When I saw I couldn't adjust the fan to go that high, I tried Precision X OC.
Same problem though; just won't go above 85 % regardless of settings.

Yeah you can its very easy, undo the screws holding the heatsink and fan unit off the card, remove it, clean off the old paste, apply new (something like MX-4), refit the heatsink and fan.

This is very common on cards this age, as the thermal paste goes old and dry and stops conducting the heat to the heatsink well. Ive replaced thermal paste on many 400/500/600 series cards for this reason.

Well, guess I'mma do that on Friday then; was gonna buy new thermal paste for my CPU and redo the one on that one anyway. Thanks!
But yeah, I'd still like to know how to do this max fan speed stuff. No matter what, IF the temperature ends up going too high, I want the fan to do what I told it to.

Its not a problem, very normal for the card makers to have min and max fan speeds in the cards bios. They dont want you running it at 100% for example if they know the fan wont last long at that speed.

Yes, on both.
Additionally, though, the thermal paste on the GPU had been applied kind of sloppily by the manufacturer to begin with; guess such lil' production mishaps just happen sometimes.
