Can I overclock RAM above my motherboards' supported frequencies?

Hi there,

After playing CS:GO on my own PC (i5-3470 & R9 290X) and the one I built for my grandparents (i3-6100 & RX 460), I noticed that I could get a smooth consistent 200+ FPS on the i3, while my i5 sometimes struggles to keep it above 110... I know it's not because of the CPU, since the i5-3470 is, although being quite old, still the faster of the two, and don't even get me started on which GPU is faster.

Ok so my point; After reading about it on other fora and after experiencing it myself, I think that RAM speed (CAS & MHz) matters quite a bit when playing CS:GO.

And now my question: Can I overclock my RAM on an ASrock H61M-VG4 motherboard that officially only supports up to 1600MHz? My RAM is a 2x4GB kit of 1866MHz HyperX Fury DDR3.

Solution

The 1060 is a lot more powerful than the RX 460, and definetely an overkill for CS:GO. Will perform like RX 460 or better.
To your ram question, no. You cannot go beyond you motherboard's supported frequency. You ll...

Well good thing I am replacing my R9 290X with an MSI GTX 1060 6GB then. Would the 1060 be better for consistent framerates? Or are you telling me a $110 RX 460 will beat both in FPS when it comes to e-sports games? And could you still answer the RAM question? I like fiddling around with tech, so a performance gain would only be nice not required.

To your ram question, no. You cannot go beyond you motherboard's supported frequency. You ll stick to 1600 mhz, but like i said, you are seeing literally zero real world difference from this jump, so no worries.

Thank you.
Last question; You said the RX 460 performs better than the R9 290X because it is optimized. Why do you say the GTX 1060 will perform like- or better than the RX 460, while my current card, the R9 290X is also way more powerful than the RX 460? What is the big difference between the 1060 and the 290X in e-sports titles?

Just because the 1060 is a newer card and you can see some benchmarks hitting well over 250 fps in CS GO.
Other than that, the i5 3470 is indeed powerful, unless you are actually overheating it should be overkill for counter strike.
CS GO is more cpu intensive game rather than gpu intensive, apart from some scenes with smoke and explosions. The R9 should handle it better if you ask me.
Can you post your temps while under load?
