Hi Folks, long time no post.

I'll keep it short.

My Sony Vaio E series from around 3 years ago came with Windows 8.0 and free updated to 8.1 no problems.

Just had to do a reformat as it was just freezing at the desktop when loading up for god knows what reason but anyways, I'm trying to now do the free upgrade to 8.1 again via the store and via microsofts website download section and it aint playing nice.

Almost immediatley it says it cannot complete, with no error code or anything.

I've spent the last hour trying various solutuons from other threads here including the "net stop wuauserv and net stop bits" method and it still doesn't wanna work.

Now most of these solutions are from a few years back as the cool kids are now on windows 10, but I'd be happy being back on 8.1 and wondering if any newer solutions are out there that I may have missed.

Any and all help appreciated. I will be back on around 8pm gmt to check replies,

Regards.

Solution
like i said, reinstalling windows again might fix the problem.

for example i recently installed windows 2000 on my old PC, and things didn't go right the first time, and reinstalling fixed the problem.

As I said, this is a fresh install of Windows 8. It just will not update to 8.1.

Yes I know. OS Installations don't always go right.
If you really don't want to reinstall again, you could try. Microsofts windows store trouble shooter ( search for it) and also try installing all available updates from Windows update.

Hi, no updates are showing in windows update, it's only when I get prompted at startup or open the windows store im being told to upgrade to 8.1

I tried running the troubleshoter and that tells me "An error occurred while troubleshooting. A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from starting"

You know you have problems when your troubleshooter needs troubleshooting.
