Need a Network Adapter - don't know anything about them!

Hi, I've recently just had virgin broadband installed. Unfortunately the wall socket for virgin had to be installed in another room. Now I do not want Ethernet cable running across rooms so have decided to settle with wifi. I used one of my old wifi adapters from years ago and only rewatched 11mbps. On my phone, Mac and wired connection I'm reaching 220mbps.

I headed out and got a new wifi USB adapter (knowing nothing about them), I bought the tp-link n300 mini. My download only increased to around 17mbps, sometimes 20. I've tried different wifi channels and router options with no luck. So now I have decided to go for a PCIe network adapter, hoping it will give a little more speed.

Could anyone recommend me a card to look into? One suitable for gaming! I know I won't reach the same speeds as Ethernet but the Mac and phones seem to be doing pretty well wireless so surely there's something out there for me!

Thanks
