First of all good morning to all Tomshardware forum goers and anyone else who passes on through, thank you for taking the time to read this.

So last night my friend had gotten a new Netgear router model WNR2020 to use in his room for his Xbox as well as better wireless signal for devices, in addition to their Xfinity modem/gateway/router all in one thing, which resides on the second lower floor of the home. Fast forward a few hours later and I am over there trying to do my best to help out and get things out, but after a few hours of tinkering and no luck, I have decided to turn to the helpful folks of the tomshardware forums. So with that being said, I will now explain whats going on and anyone who wants to continue to read, I thank you!

So first thing is first and that is that the main internet gateway is from Xfinity, and is model TG1682 I believe. Connected to this Xfinity device is a handful of wireless devices, a hardwired desktop computer, and then a CAT5 cable going to the new Netgear WNR2020 upstairs in a bedroom. It should be added that halfway through this run, this is some type of Ethernet splitter device. It has the one end of the cable coming from the Xfinity device, and has two outputs, one to a smart tv, and the other finishing the run upstairs to the Netgear. I have drawn up a little network map using packet tracer that shows everything that is there. (note the wrong devices and connections are used for anyone thats familiar with Packet Tracer) The solid black line is CAT cable, while dotted represents a wireless connection. https://gyazo.com/9653d87b4a3de9df65549575d3457240
So what happens is this; When running this setup for xbox use, you get normal download/ upload speeds of something around 80 down and 10 up give or take, but the NAT is set to moderate. If you uplug the cat5 cable that is plugged into the back of the Netgear coming from downstairs xfinity device, and plug that into the xbox, you get much slower speeds 8 down, 1 up, and an open NAT. To me it doesnt make sence how the download and upload speeds can be drastically slower coming straight from the gate/modem/router. It should be added also that these two devices have two different address schemes. The Xfinity router uses 192.168, while netgear uses 10.0.

When I figured that out, I changed the IP of the Netgear to the 10.0 address scheme and plugged that cable coming from downstairs from the xfinity device, back into the netgear. We had the same results. With that being said, how would you get these two devices to work together to get everything working the way it should be? Such as the open NAT, and the proper speeds you are paying for. It seems to me like the it would be best just to not use this netgear router since its not really needed, and just use the xfinity, but the speeds are incredibly slow for some odd reason, but you have your open NAT. It just doesn't make sense to me on how you the speed can be much faster going through the netgear added router in the network, Im assuming it has something to do with the different address scheming.

To anyone that actual read all that, thank you. If anyone has any suggestions on which route I should take to get this resolved, or has anymore questions just let me know please and thank you.

You are asking for trouble with this setup. You are double natting your connection on the LAN side of the Netgear router, is there the option within the netgear to run as an access point instead of a router? If not you can give the netgear router a static IP on the same subnet as the other router but outside of DHCP range, turn off DHCP on the netgear and also any firewall. Connect the netgear to the first router lan to lan, do not use the wan port. As it stands anything connected to the netgear has to be routed from lan to wan and then lan to wan again.........

Thank you for taking the time to read that and give some suggestions! After making some of these changes things seem to be going good and the way they should be. Once again thank you!
