What can you connect with an i7 7740X?

Why get the 7740X? That CPU makes almost no sense as it has nil resale value and disables tons of features on X299 motherboards. Unless you are absolutely certain that you will get a higher-end model in the not-so-distant future, it makes no sense. And if you do plan to upgrade the CPU, you may be better off eating the $200-500 extra up-front instead of burning $350 now and another $700+ later.

To make things worse, there have been rumors that the 12-18 core models may require a new socket revision, which means LGA2066 could be a dead socket by this time next year.
Do you plan on dropping $500-1000 in the future? If so, then I say go for it. However, if you are sticking with that? Just get the Z270 and a i7-7700K. No point in using the X299 when many features will be disbaled.

You can also think about getting the Ryzen 5 1600 with 6 cores 12 threads and a B350, which can be cheaper than the X299 motherboard itself.

That's interesting. I thought they were coming out around Threadripper. This isn't good news for Intel.

They are coming either later this year or early next year. The reason I said LGA2066 may be obsolete by this time next year is because if the HCC SKL-X ends up requiring LGA2066 "v2", then KLX-HCC (and possibly even the LCC variant) will be designed for for that too.

Also, Intel is likely to continue using new sockets with every other new generation. I don't expect Intel to become truly competitive with AMD on a perf-per-buck basis in time for KLX-LCC/HCC, which means you'll need a new socket by the time that happens too. Buying a throw-away CPU for LGA2066 only makes sense if you are planning to upgrade the CPU within the next ~18 months assuming future CPUs are compatible with current LGA2066 boards. If the upgrade from 7740X is much sooner than that, it would make more sense to sit on the ~$1000 CPU+MoBo+RAM a while longer and go straight for what you meant to get in the first place. Motherboard and CPU prices may have time to drop a bit by then with ThreadRipper's launch. RAM prices may drop too with DRAM manufacturers ramping up production to catch up with demand now that prices are worth it again.

Long story short, the medium/long-term value of investing in a 7740X and x299 platform is far too speculative for my taste at this point in time. I'd just get a 7700/z270 and look into CFL/CNL-X LCC/HCC 2-3 years from now if necessary, which is going to be on a new socket even if for no other reason than to catch up with ThreadRipper's 64 PCIe lanes.
