I have a GTX 970, and recently my monitor black-screened mid-game. I rebooted the system but there it just showed the windows logo and some weird horizontal lines running across the screen. I then connected the DVI cable directly to the motherboard and it works just fine. A few days later, I tried out the GPU again, and it worked fine, for a few hours before it black screened again. Help very much appreciated.

Sounds like your graphics card is dying. Verify you have all the latest drivers. What power supply are you using?

Fairly safe PSU, can you test putting that graphics card in a different PCI-e slot, and do you have another card you can use to make sure your 970 is dying?

Loads of stuff, but likely it was just time and use, or it was just a faulty card to begin with and was likely to start dying at any old time.

No, I mean on the motherboard where your graphics card is seated, is there another slot you can put the card into?

Yeah, more than likely I think your graphics card has gone to the great big recycling center in the sky.
If you can, try the 970 in a different computer, but I don't think you're going to see that working
