Hi,

Have a cable running about 30 meters from building 1 to building 2

Modem/Router to Web is in Building 2 and it connects by cable to Modem and PCs in building 1

After 15 years it just stopped. Can't see anything obvious however some goes under house so could be there or even the moulded plugs either end.

I did an Antsig Network Tool test and all lights light up except 7 plus G doesn't light up.

Any help please on what this could be, if repairable or just go through the pain of a re-cable!

Thanks

oz

If you do not have extra length buy a short piece of cable to practice with making a short jumper cable a couple times. It is not hard but you can only learn this by doing and learning how the cable feels when it slides in correctly. Almost impossible to describe but you can tell when the wires seat all the way to the end. You do not want to mess it up when the cable is very short and you can't cut any more off and have to rerun the cable.

Another way to do this is to terminate the ends with keystone wall jacks and then use a short commercial patch cable to connect from the jack to your end equipment. If you do not already have the crimping tool to put ends on rj45 it will not be much cost difference. Most home...
Most the time the failures are on the ends. If the cable is completely protected then it is highly unlikely it is the cable itself. Cables that are buried or touch the ground, the soil can damage the plastic if it is not designed to be direct bury.

I would replace the ends and see if you get lucky. The cable technically could be repaired but finding the break when it is just a single wire will be hard. The outrageously expensive professional testing meters could tell you the distance to the break. They make punch down type spice couplers and even ones that are waterproof.

Thanks for the reply.

Strangely enough I got a small bathroom brush and gave the ends a good clean , plugged it in and it ran great for about 5 days, but today it is back to it's old tricks..

It is not just 'off', the lights on the modem are on for a few secs then off then on again. Then maybe off for a while then on/off again. Really weird.

The cable is a re moulded cable and I have never done the ends before.. however looks like now the experience coming up :)

None of it should be touching the ground, mainly above ground and under flooring hanging from joists before floor went down 15/20 years ago.

Any tricks I should know about the fixing the new plugs to the cable. Will youtube it too. Usually some good help there put up by 'angels' who want to help.

Most home improvement stores sell keystones and they have a plastic punch down tool...crap compared to a profession tool but it works. Keys stones are about $3 each and another $1 or so if you want a actual wall plate.

The keystones are very easy to do because you do one wire at a time and if you mess up you can pull it out and try again.

Many thanks again.. I really do appreciate the help and suggestions.

I bought a crimper and plugs and did as you suggested, practising on some cable and yes while it is fiddly and a bit of a pain if the wires are hard to move, I was able to get the right wires into the right place .. I think anyway.

I also bought and Antsig Network Tester and tested the actual long cable that is playing up and all the lights worked except 7.

Bit the bullet and cut one end of the cable and after a while seated the new one. Tested it and lights are still the same.. no 7

The light on the Billion (1 end of the cable) goes green on and off for that port, and the CG300 on the other end, remains orange. This is the same as before the plug change.

I have tried that cable in other ports on both modems, but no dif.

I guess I will change the other end of the cable to see if that helps.

Thanks again

Well, nothing seemed to work, so re cables it.

I have ordered a Test Unit that tells where the fault is in the cable as I am still interested to know what was wrong.

The cable is still there so if I get it up again at least I have a fallback.
