Hello altogether,

based on my previous thread on http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-3447665/external-hdd-clicks-powering.html#xtor=EPR-8809 I have an additional question. It´s a bit software-related but still refers to a hardware-scenario (external HDD).

My situation is the following:

I run Linux/Lubuntu 16.04.2 LTS (64bit) from an external USB-drive (USB 2.0). This drive is a WD Elements 25A2 [ Device Model: WDC WD10JMVW-11AJGS4 ].
The WD-hard drive is connected to the PC not directly but via a hub with a power-supply of its own (hama).

When shutting down my operating-system I can still hear the drive spinning for a while, to be more precise: for exactly 30 minutes.
This is because the PC is shut down but the power-supply of the external hub is still on. Of course I want to switch it off overnight as well.
Yet I still have to wait for the HDD to stop spinning. After that the read-/write head will be set to its parking-position.
In order not to have to wait for so long I use the command
"sudo hdparm -S 60 /dev/sdc" (sdc being my external HDD) before powering off my PC.

If I am informed correctly this command is active only for the current session and after reboot all values will be set to standard again. Unless I modify /etc/hdparm.conf .
And that´s exactly what I don´t want to do. Otherwise the values would be set to 5 minutes for standby-mode on my running system-disk, which probably wouldn´t be a good idea.

My question is:
Could this be the right way for me: enter "sudo hdparm -S 60 /dev/sdc" every time before shutting down? Won´t it affect the external HDD in any undesired way or will I be o.k. doing that?
I don´t have any problems performing this procedure and that way I´ll always have the standard values with each reboot.

Thank you very much for your help in advance.

Many greetings

Rosika :)

*****UPDATE*****

In the meantime I wrote to Mark Lord, the author of hdparm.
According to him the above mentioned procedure would be one way to go. Although there are ways to automate this.

Nevertheless it works for me. ;)

Greetings.
