Ok so I have ordered a PC without an operating system. What I want to know, is if I clone my window 10 operating system on my laptop to the SSD of the PC (and then switch OS on my laptop back to windows 8 for example), then will it all work? Or will Microsoft recognise that it's not the same machine and prevent it from working?

Solution

And you will need to actually purchase a whole new OS for your new system.

Cloning your OS from your laptop won't work well because it is tailored to the devices in your laptop. It might boot, it might not. It might blue screen randomly. You would be violating the license for windows by having the same license key on two hosts.

Almost certainly will not work. Probably won't boot up at all.

And assuming you Upgraded the laptop OS (originally Win 8) to Win 10....that REALLY won't work.
You don't get to use both. Either Win 8, or Upgrade the laptop to Win 10. Not both.

Actually, he's wanting to do it the other way around.
He already has the laptop with OS. Win 8 upgraded to Win 10.
The new desktop is lacking an OS.

Still won't work, though.

Ok so from my research it seems that I'll have to use a Microsoft USB to boot the new computer and install the OS on as my laptop's operating system is not only tied to the hard drive, but also tied to the motherboard.
