Yesterday i installed linux for the first time along with my windows 8.1. Because of my limited hardisk, i partitioned it with only 12gb. But during the installation i came across swap space and allocated 2gb to it. Now i see that i should've allocated it more(since my ram is 4gb, 4+2gbs should be allocated as swap space).

Is that a necessity? Since I've given only 12gb for linux, 6gb as swap space seems impossible... Can someone help me out...

Solution
You will need another partition where to place the swap. Since cutting off 12gb from Linux partition looks extreme, try to shrink some of other partitions to create 4gb of swap.

Keep in mind that standard MBR partitioning scheme allows for 4 primary partitions, or three primary and up to four in an extended partition.

However you create swap space, this is secondary to the issue that 12GB is really not enough space for a useful modern Linux install. You are going to run into problems, particularly after a few updates. Disk space is very cheap nowadays - buy a second disk, or a bigger one if you can only have one disk, and set aside 50-100GB for the Mint install.

I agree with this 100%. With hard drives as cheap as they are, I would never consider less than at least 40 gb per OS. Right now I am triple booting and each OS has its own 250 gb SSD, that way I can really use and play with each OS to its fullest.
