So long story short, somehow i diagnosed that the microphone component of my onboard sound card no longer works, (audio is completely fine). So i was wondering if i could resolve this problem by using a random 3.5mm jack to usb adapter to connect my microphone to my pc and bypass the sound card. Since i only need the microphone for gaming, sound quality isn't an issue, so i was hoping to purchase the cheapest adapter i could find. I have heard of external usb sound card's but they seem quite expensive compared to cheaper adapters i have come across. Are they the same?

I use a USB headset/mic. There's a few quirks that go along with that setup, such as it not being plug and play like a regular 3.5mm, so if you aren't plugged in before starting a game, you'll get no change if plugging/unplugging mid game. But other than that, if you have the right drivers, yes it'll work. Without those drivers, you'll get nothing from USB as it'll not be recognised as a microphone
