I've been using a SSD for my pc and a HDD for storage for a couple of years, but my HDD has disappeared today, its not showing in device manager. Ive tried unplugging it and plugging back in but still the same.

Is there a way to find out the problem or has it just died?

The best way to tell if the PC sees it at all is to go out of Windows entirely - that is, check in the BIOS. Depending on the make of board you have you have to press one of a few possible keys (common ones are F!, F2, F10) to get in there.

If it's seen in the BIOS but not in Windows, I'd advise you to go back to the Device manager and re-set the storage controller. Look under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" and delete the entries under that heading, then reboot the system.

If it doesn't appear in the BIOS anywhere, replace it (I hope you had some kind of backup, whether local or cloud)

http://

Its seems to be showing in the bios, but says its unknown.

Well it seems to see it, since it shows the full model number (ST1000DM003-1C). It's just "software preserve" which is unknown.

So, I'd try the driver trick I mentioned above. When windows reboots it will re-install that driver and should then pick up all the drives again.

I cant see "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" you mentioned under storage controller.
