Looking to help a buddy pick parts for a build for 1080p gaming and overclocking. Intel preferred. Need OS. No monitor or k/m. Games like bf1 mobas and rpgs. Dont need any craziness for his first build

Solution

The i5-6600K, though a good OC'able CPU in its own right (a few years back), would be limited in performance (more dramatically with OC) especially on BF1 with the CPU's 4-core/4-thread (no Hyper Threading) compared to the i7 (4-core/8-thread).

Take a closer look at this very nice detailed comparison of the unlocked i5 vs the unlocked i7 on BF1 (campaign and multiplayer), in 1080p at Ultra/High/Medium/Low settings:

So, with a ~$800 budget, you might not able to fit an i7-7700K which has better performance in the games your buddy will play, hence, it is very logical to highly consider the new AMD Ryzen...

Just threw this one together. (Just under 900 but I'm sure you and your bud could swap some things around to meet his budget)

An overclockable/unlocked Intel (your preference) platform would not fit your ~$800 budget as the i5-7600K and i7-7700K costs way too much (plus costs for an aftermarket cooler) compared to the AMD Ryzen 5 1600, which has better price/performance, lower TDP, overclockable, and has a decent stock cooler included.

Here is a suggested ~$800 build:

Note:
- Highly-recommended to grab a ~240/250GB SSD to speed up boot times and loading times, if you can still stretch your budget to ~$900.
