Best HDD for CCTV surveillance system?

Hello,

Recently my 2TB Seagate Barracuda HDD crapped out on me when using for my parents' CCTV surveillance system I installed for them. The way the DVR works is every 30 days or when the HDD is full, it completely formats it to allow a new set of recording to be saved to it. However, it kind of seems bad for hard drives that are not specifically optimized for that type of wear, causing it to eventually corrupt. For some reason, it can no longer save recordings to the HDD let alone playback any recordings. My parents and I are now on a search for a new HDD to replace the current one but something that's "budget" and not expensive.

I was reading about the WD Purple Surveillance HDD 1TB version was the "sweet spot" of the Purple series and anything higher in storage space had a bad run. I also heard the HDD's specifically optimized for surveillance use can handle the wear such as the reading/writing more than a standard every day HDD.

I'm not sure how much they're willing to spend but what do you recommend?

You're correct that regular desktop drives like the BarraCuda don't hold up as well to surveillance applications like the CCTV use you mentioned. The best drive for this use is going to be a surveillance-branded drive. Seagate's current model of surveillance drives is called SkyHawk. Where the BarraCuda drives are only rated for 8 hours a day x 5 days a week use, and a workload rating of 55TB, a SkyHawk drive is rated for 24x7 use and a workload rating of 180TB. SkyHawk drives are optimized for workloads which look something like writing (recording) about 90% of the time, and reading (playback) about 10% of the time. I'm not exactly sure of what the process is. I think you're right on that but formats the drive when it's full. I'll have to double check.

When hard drives gets full my Logan's CCTV DVR only erase the 1st day of recording so you can record one more day and playback what happened last month.

Regarding HDD for video surveillance, i have tested WD purple series and seagate skyhawk series, both worked flawless.
