I can connect to my router with wifi but i would prefer ethernet. I have tried every method i could find, but nothing worked. the cable works on another computer so its not the cable. a friend of mine noticed it was weird that the ethernet does not have a default gateway. can anyone help.

Can you post an output of a "ipconfig" command issued in command prompt? This would really help in troubleshooting this. If you don't have a default gateway then it sounds like a DHCP issue. You could also try assigning a static IP to the computer in the same network as your LAN. If that works, then it is definitely a DHCP issue.
