I have an HP laptop that got dropped and it looks like the only damage is to the hard drive. I removed the hard drive and was able to hook it up to another computer through USB and use a live version of Ubuntu to recover a some files but others still didn't make it.

I can order a new hard drive and swap it into the laptop, but the main thing I'm wondering is how can I reinstall and activate windows 10 on it?

The laptop did not come with any recover CD, and from looking at HP's website for my model it doesn't look like one is available for download or ordering either. HP just says that the HP recovery program on your hard drive can assist, but I don't think that's an option in my case.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

Copies of Windows 10 are tied to the motherboard. Go to this URL:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

And follow the directions for the media you want to use.

The hp doesn't have a special Windows 10 that you have to use - a recovery disk just means it'll have Windows 10, the hp-specific drivers, and whatever crapware they pre-load onto your laptop. Clean Windows 10 on the new hard drive then search the hp site for any drivers Windows can't find by itself.

Thanks! I knew HP wouldn't have anything specific for Windows 10. I was just used to traditional Windows Installations where you needed to have a CD Key and then activate it using a code in order for it to work. I'm glad to see the OS is tied to the the motherboard for situations like this.
