Hi
I've built my rig and I have a concern. I'm using a Kaby Lake 7700K and a Arctic freezer 360 cpu cooler.
When I run Small FFT in Prime95 28.10, in about 30 minutes my temperatures is 80 degrees Celsius on 4.5ghz (ambient about 28 degrees).
is that normal ?
and can I oc to 5ghz without any problem ?

Solution

Get Prime 95 Vers 26.6 and run it again, your temps will be lower.

Do NOT use Prime95 versions later than 26.6 on 2nd through 7th Generation i3, i5 or i7 CPU's, which all have AVX (Advanced Vector Extension) Instruction Sets. Recent versions of Prime95 such as 28.1 and 28.9 run AVX code on the CPU's Floating Point Unit (FPU) which causes unrealistic temperatures up to 20°C higher. The FPU test in the utility AIDA64 shows similar results.

AVX can be disabled in Prime95 versions later than 26.6 by inserting "CpuSupportsAVX=0" into the "local.txt" file in Prime95's folder. However, since Core temperatures will be the same as 26.6, it's easier to just use 26.6. AVX doesn't affect Core i 1st Generation, Core 2, Pentium or Celeron processors since they don't have AVX Instruction Sets.

• Prime95 v26.6 - http://www.mersenneforum.org/showthread.php?t=15504

Here's the accepted operating range for Core temperature:

85°C Hot
80°C Hot
75°C Warm
70°C Warm
65°C Norm
55°C Norm
45°C Norm
35°C Cool
30°C Cool
25°C Cold

Core temperatures above 85°C aren't recommended.

Core temperatures increase and decrease with Ambient temperature.

As a point of comparison for reference, my own 7700K at stock 4.2/4.5 GHz fluctuates between 70-73C on P95 28.10 Build 1, also on small FFTs; the temps stop gradually rising at about the 12 minute point.

This is with a Noctua NH D15, single fan config, thin film of Noctua-supplied paste.

Your 80C is a tad higher, but, remember, P95 is the worst case load ever applied to a CPU; normal gaming loads would be 10C less at least. Overclocking to 5 GHz with a higher vcore will crank temps quickly, so, your call there....)

so why my cpu is hot from your cpu ?
is the cpu cooler really bad or what ?

crash bash,

You need to compare apples to apples in order to draw a meaningful conclusion. I gave you a link to download 26.6 so we can eliminate AVX as a variable, and I explained in detail why.

Please give it a try.

are you delid your cpu ?

not delidded, but only running at stock speeds using Noctua NH D15 (single fan, 2nd fan used as case intake fan due to case width constraints), and very thin layer of Noctua thermal compound...

Temps at idle- 28-30C
Temps running Defender scan- 50C
Intel stress test- 61C
P95 - 71-73C

That's pretty much what I get with mine also, I7 7700K at 4.8 GHz.

The temps are almost laughable with the NH D15, they are so low even compared to my other NH U12S.

High 60's, low 70's in Prime 95. LOL
