So I have a Asus Strix rx 480 8gb oc edition. The normal temperature here at my place is 29 to lets say 34C. And my GPU temp at idle is 32C something when i boot it up. When I watch youtube or something and check my idle temp it changes to 45 to 47C. When I run games like CSGO on low res and low graphics (not anisotropic filtering and msa etc.) I get 63 to 70c temp. When I play games like Far cry 4 I get 87 to 89C.. I cleaned all the dust I could from the outside without removing the heatsink (Not with compressed air) and adjusted wires so it dosent block airflow. I have 4 120mm fans in my cpu. 1 rear, 1 top and 2 front. I am hoping its the surrounding area thats effecting the temps. If not I will have to remove the card and clean? But the cars is only 6 months old and I havent clean it since..... Sooooo.....????

Solution
Dirty PSU will heat up more, causing it to loose efficiency, and perhaps increasing overall temp in the case. But I doubt it could affect GPU temps in significant way.
6 months and no cleaning? Sounds like it's about time to do it. 60-70 is normal range for this card under heavy load (http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/amd-radeon-rx-480-graphics-card-roundup,review-33851-6.html). Almost 90 is too much. Check if all 3 fans work as they should.

Yes thats the card... Just the oc edition if it matters.. So I have brushed the heatsink of gpu from the outside without removing anything. Do you think I should get a air can and clean the heatsink by removing it from the gpu?? Or I guess it is because of the ambient temp which is 28 to 30C

I think I found the problem (maybe) I havent cleaned my psu for 1 year.... yes.. Well I remember just brushing it once.. but thats it. The PSU fan is full of dust and I think that is causing the psu to not give enough power or something? (Fingers crossed) thats the problem but well for me, I solve one problem with my pc and a new one pops up. Thats how I learnt pc stuff my way. Anyways so yea thats the prob i guess?

Soooo their is a problem with the GPU itslef? Also my CPU temps are at 45 to 50C at max load. I have an intel 15 4460 with a stock cooler (Yes yes I am poor)
So no psu or airflow prob... only the GPU.. I will reply once I get the results from cleaning the gpu. THANKS!

*gulp* I am scared now... Should I send a photo of my gpu and it'd heatsink??

As far as I can see, the tests were done on the OCed version.
Anyway, no reason to be scared - it still works after all. Those cards can survive 90 degrees without any problem, you are only facing performance lose and perhaps shorter life span, but it's not going to blow up soon (or at least it shouldn't).

Now this made me more worried.. I don't think I am buying any other gpu in 5 years.. Let's hope the air can does its work

I re did the CPU temp test and the lowest temp I got was 53C, average 55C and max 58C. Is it good or bad?

Hey do you know that yellow sticks at the bottom of gpu where you plug it I to the PCI e slot?? Well one of the sticks stickers or whatever is half.. Just the yellow sticker thingy not the solid object.. I don't know that it matters but does it means it is damaged??

Under load or idle? (Whenever taking about temps, always state is it idle/load temp, otherwise it's hard to tell anything).

If you mean the gold pins on the PCIe slot, that's okay. Some of them are supposed to be shorter then others (PCIe standard says they are necessary for hot-plug capability - not that you would ever hot-plug GPU, but standard is standard).

No I was taking about CPU temp :( I wish I had that temps for GPU tho.. Today I was playing The Walking Dead 3 and I got from 75C lowest to idk.. 85 highest?
First the game was running on Sub 80C then the episode changed and then it was from 80C to 83C

About fans:
The further the fan is away, the less capable it is of cooling. I've found rapidly diminishing returns going past 600RPM for the intake and exhaust.

If you want to do a TEST, get another fan or take one of the front case fans and rig something up so it mounts and blows air SIDEWAYS across the card (like it's mounted to the case.. or if you can mount a case fan on the side do that.. my CPU cooler was in the way).

I've got a hole where a fan would mount and feel a lot of HEAT coming out of that when gaming so I'm helping the temperature just by having that hole next to my card, so a fan would help even better.

(Not sure if blowing or sucking works better. it may be that blowing works better at lower temperatures and sucking/exhaust works better at higher temperatures as it may be more important to get rid of the heat).

Again, the CLOSER the fan is the better it cools.

You can even just take the side of the case off and see how much that helps.

*Temperature deltas mean that if you hit 90degC and room temperature is 30degC then you should be hitting 80degC when the room temp is 20degC.

http://cxzoid.blogspot.ca/2017/02/asus-rx-480-strix-oc-review.html

"In the OC test with stock thermal paste the card started throttling at around 86C. This is not due the temperature limit which is at 90C for this card like very other RX 480 I've tested but due to the fact that higher temperatures cause higher power draw and at 86C core temperature that card was pulling well over the 165W power limit that an RX 480 with +50% power has."

I don't know if you tried to overclock further, but it may not be a good idea.

OMMMMMGGG DUUUUUDDDEEES!!!! I DONT- TH- OMG! I am SOOOOO HAPPPY! Ok.. calm down... yes.. so Yea I was playing the walking dead season 3.. Suddenly the PC stopped like all the lights and fan turned off and the monitor turned black.. So I opened up the side panel and checked the temp of the gpu.. I HAVE NEVER TOUCHED SOMETHING SO HOT IN MY LIFE! I flinched so hard.. Ok I am being dramatic.. It was I gues 90C or something when it crashed? Okay So I removed the GPU and kept it under a fan on the GPU box.. Like the one inside where all the manuals and codes are stored. Then I messed around with the case, re-routing all the cables and stuff. Then I saw that the bottom of my case was dirty so I also cleaned that. Then I finally put the GPU back on. And oh I also removed some dust off the gpu with a slim brush. So when I put it back on I noticed the only one screw that holded it on place was not at all that tight and the gpu was looking like it was going to fall or something.. So I screwed it as tight as I could and tried to make it perfectly straight. It worked. Then I turned on my pc again and tested out The walking dead 3.. GUESS WHAT TEMPS I GOT!!! 65C!!!! YES!! THE GAME WHICH RAN AT 90C IS NOW RUNNING AT 65C!!!! THANKS EVERYBODY AND LOVE YOU ALL FOR THE HELP!!! oh wait.... I bought a can of compressed air too! UGHHH! (I thought it would be funny but I guess it is not) BYE! AND THANK YOU AGAIN

Okay so I tested the game with Far CRY 4 Ultra settings (Max) and the temp I got was 85C to 87c Sometimes or most of the times locked at 85C.. Due you think it is because of ambient temp? Its 30C to 33C again (Ambient temp) Walking dead 3 runs at 66C max.. I will still clean it with air can tho..
