Dxtory lag while recording

Hey guys,

Recently i have been trying to record some gameplay from rainbow six siege with dxtory. i have tried it with the lagarith codec first. it didnt affect the game performance, but the actual video was low res and ran like a powerpoint presentation, despite being set to lossless. later i tried x264, but that one did affect game performance. eventually i did manage to get smooth footage, but it was low res and the game itself suffered, despite not showing that on the recording. My question is: how do i fix it so i can record 1080p 60 fps. the problem also arises with killing floor 2 and black ops 3.

Dont know the exact specifics of my hardware but i have an i7 processor, a gtx970 and 16gb ram. the game itself is installed on an SSD and the recording is written to a HDD that can manage 150mb/s according to dxtory's benchmark.

Would love to hear solutions or tips for improvement in general :)

Make sure you have all wires attached firmly to your MB, including the 8 pin CPU one that usually goes somewhere near the top of the MB. Also check to see if there are any BIOS updates for your MB.

Also check wires, temps and voltages on your GPU, and make sure all fans are spinning if it's an aftermarket cooled one.
What bitrate are you using? 1080p60 requires pretty high bitrate.

You can get better performance using the DxTory codec and outputting to RawCap, which allows you to assign multiple drives (HDD or SSD, or a combination), to write the capture file. You then convert the RawCap files to Avi with it's RawCapConvert tool. The only problem is the DxTory codec writes huge files, so I suggest using Med or even Low quality, which are still good.

That said, if I were you, given your criteria, I would just use ShadowPlay instead. DxTory cannot match it's efficiency on file size and convenience, especially if most of your videos are 20 minutes or less. It's pretty simple and convenient to be able to just hit the shadow record key after 20 min of good gameplay, instead of trial and error recording. Plus ShadowPlay yields pretty good quality captures at the highest setting.

i have no idea how to check that. and i really wanted to use dxtory since it also simultaniously records my microphone and discord audio in diffrent channels. it saves me massive amounts of effort for editing.

for what its worth, i have confirmed i have an i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz. i ran intel processor diagnostic tool 3 times today, right after playing some R6 siege without recording. first time it failed and stopped at the cpu load test mentioning something about temperature. the next 2 times it ran the entire test and gave me a ''pass''.

PS i sank money into dxtory and as a student who now has rent to pay as well im kinda hell bent on getting every penny's worth out of that sucker

Bitrate is checked by Low - High settings when using DxTory codec or actual bitrate when using x264. It's accessed via the tiny square tab to the right of the dropdown box you use to choose codec.

When using x264, that square tab will take you to a page like this, but you need to select ABR mode (Average Bit Rate), to adjust bitrate.

Again, I would highly suggest first trying the DxTory codec if you have more than one drive to use to write the capture files and have space on those drives for captures. This is because using x264 is always more resource intense since advanced calculations are being made to compress the file.

Here's an easy to use guide on how to setup DxTory for RawCap mode.

When i switch to bitrate its on 800 out of 999999. i've never used this tab before since i recorded ratefactor based. That one was standing on 20.00 out of 51.00. The bar is roughly on the same spot when i switch between the two. Do you suggest i use the bitrate based option?

As for multiple drives: i have one SSD that doesnt have much space left at all, a quarter TB HDD but it writes at just 50Mbps and a 1TB HDD which writes at 150Mbps(the one im currently using for records)

Yes, use ABR, but 800 bitrate is way too low for 1080p60. You may need as high as 10,000, but start with 3,000, then 5,000. Always test with short 1 minute clips to make things easier.

Fine tuning the Bitrate is something that is dependent on preferences and screen size of display. It can take a half hour to an hour to get it dialed in.

Also, try to account for YouTube's Flash (it's actually HTML 5, but similar) conversion. It always degrades original image quality.

There is however a trick you can use to get YouTube to use a higher bitrate when it converts. With a tool like VirtualDub, you can convert the 1080p Avi to 2048x1152. Just select Direct stream copy in the video and audio tabs, and Resize via Video>Filters>Add, then set it to 2048x1152. Then select File>Save as Avi. It will rather quickly make a copy at that res.

This will add a very slight amount of blur due to increasing the resolution without increasing the pixels, but YouTube more than makes up for it by using higher bitrate.

thanks for the tips. I'm going to fiddle around with some settings this week. I'm also getting help from a friend this weekend to take my build apart and do a thorough cleaning, since i have also been getting cpu temp errors. I'll keep you posted on the results somewhere around the end of this week.

ok, test results are in. before the cleaning took place i was testing with the suggested bitrate factor, but again, all i got was low res footage, but now with a lot of visual glitches included. Yesterday i opened my pc up, did a lot of cleaning, and renewed the thermal paste of my cpu. Now that sucker is running fine and im getting nice smooth 1080p with 60fps. i guess that was the main villain.

But one more question on the side: i started my computer up just now and got a ''CPU Fan Error!''. I have checked it and it seems to be running just fine, my cpu temp was around 48 degrees Celsius below max. Did i forget to do something like hooking up e certain wire, or did i mess up something else?

Ok, another update: The quality of the videos, while still better, have gone down again. Plus after editing the video footage is VERY glitchy. This is the result of both DxTory and fraps footage. I really doubt adobe premiere pro is to blame since it worked perfectly on the same settings about a year and a half ago. So is my CPU bust, or is something else going on?
