Hi,
I'm putting together a pc with old parts and have been given a 500gb hard drive by a friend that he took out of his parent's old pc. I already have an ssd with windows 7 on it. The old drive still had data on it, including windows vista. I have tried formatting the drive but windows won't let me. Am I doing something wrong? If anyone could help I would be very grateful.
Cheers.

Solution
Try Minitools Partition Wizard.

Windows' built-in partitioning and formatting tools will fail for all sorts of silly and obscure reason. Microsoft puts very little effort into supporting non-standard and non-Windows partitioning schemes. I vaguely recall running into a similar problem with a drive pulled from a Vista box, and had to use a dedicated partitioning tool to wipe it.
