Hello everyone! I realized yesterday how aging my gaming desktop really is – so I figured it is high time to upgrade it. I will be re-using some of my components (but if you think anything I’m planning on reusing below should be upgraded, please let me know).

I’m based in Stockholm, Sweden, and planning to spend SEK 15,000 – 20,000 (approx. USD 1,700 – 2,300). Ideally, I’ll buy and build during this and next week.

Usage will be mostly general gaming, with the possibility to power VR.

I have an Antec midtower ATX case from a few (4-5) years back, a 850w PSU and a SSD, all of which I plan to reuse. I also have an OK monitor already (1920x1200), so not looking to upgrade right now (but will upgrade to a 4k monitor at some point in the future).

Parts to Upgrade – My first thoughts on the upgrade are:
Asus ROG Strix Z270E, SEK 2,099 https://www.inet.se/produkt/1900167/asus-rog-strix-z270e-gaming

Core i7-7700K, SEK 3,489. https://www.inet.se/produkt/5300180/intel-core-i7-7700k-4-2-ghz-8mb

Corsair 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 2400MHz CL14 Vengeance LPX, SEK 2,899 https://www.inet.se/produkt/5300213/corsair-32gb-2x16gb-ddr4-2400mhz-cl14-vengeance-lpx-svart

MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB Gaming X, SEK 7,999 https://www.inet.se/produkt/5403252/msi-geforce-gtx-1080-ti-11gb-gaming-x

Total works out to SEK 16,486 – so there is still some room within the budget.

I am happy for suggestions for any substitutions or additional upgrades.

Many thanks in advance!

Edit: Forgot to ask, what should I get for CPU cooling?

I just bought an Asrock X370 Taichi and love it - it is definitely one of the best X370 boards you can get out there right now. Alternately the Asus Strix X370 and Gigabyte Aorus are worthy of consideration.

No. Do not buy a Hyper 212 Evo for a 7700K, there's far better coolers you can get out there for not much more money. These coolers would be much better:

- Cryorig H5: https://www.inet.se/produkt/6912043/cryorig-h5-ultimate
- Noctua NH-U9B: https://www.inet.se/produkt/6308772/noctua-nh-u9b-se2
- Phanteks TC-12DX: https://www.inet.se/produkt/6912094/phanteks-ph-tc12dx-svart

OP - are you set on getting Intel? I would actually suggest getting an R7-1700X in this case, but for straight up gaming the 7700K is still a good CPU.

Thank you both! Adding some info:

Something that should be replaced :) Thank you for noticing and for your recommendations.

Thank you for the recommendations for coolers - will look into them.

I'm not really set on getting Intel - happy to go for the Ryzen. The benchmarks I saw didn't really have it ahead of the 7700K for gaming though (but I don't really care too much about the last few FPS). One advantage of the AMD I guess would be that the motherboard might last longer - if I want to upgrade the 7700k I'm guessing it will be to another socket anyway. Speaking of which, do you have any motherboard recommendations if I go with the R7-1700X?

Thank you!
