Which motherboards are compatible with ryzen 5 CPUs right out of the box? I currently have a mobo that's bios is not updated to work with ryzen 5s. I figure it'll be easier to refund and replace it with a mobo that is compatible right out of the box.

The motherboard you are going to need has an AM4 socket Type. So when researching for your perfect motherboard make sure it shows "Socket Type: AM4"
There are many options to choose from ranging from $60 https://www.amazon.com/PRIME-A320M-K-Ryzen-Micro-ATX-Motherboard/dp/B06ZY2F35X/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1498977106&sr=1-1&keywords=am4 to anything expensive such as https://www.amazon.com/ASRock-X370-PROFESSIONAL-GAMING-Motherboard/dp/B06X9MP4ML/ref=sr_1_6?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1498977143&sr=1-6&keywords=am4+motherboard
you are going to make sure the motherboard has everything you need and is compatible with all your other parts

The problem is non of the boards are guaranteed to run RyZen 5, you could get one of the newer boards that already has the bios updated on it, or you could end up with one for the first released boards that came with only R7 support, my suggestion would be to buy your board from a dedicated computer shop, not places like amazon etc, where if there is a problem, it wouldnt be an issue for you to drop it back into them to get the bios updated, or ask the place you buy from to make sure the bios is upto date before they send it out to you.

Which board do you have now ?
