My dad is giving me an old workstation pc so that I can game on it. It has an Intel Xeon W3565 and a Quadro 4000 in it now. Everything that I've seen is that the quadro is not a good card for gaming. is this true or should I look to upgrade the card.

Nvidia's newer UEFI cards have been pretty good interfacing with older legacy BIOS boards. I have never had a problem, and I have a lot of old rigs (sigh). Newer AMD cards haven't been as solid in that regard for me, unfortunately...

HP Z400 actually. Do you think that a GTX 1050 ti would work well with that processor? That's the one I've been looking at lately.

Google is your friend. If you searched for those key parts you would see the CPU came out in 2009, 8 years ago. So yeah it was a fine and still a fine CPU, but not a i7 Overclocking Kabylake. At least your running DDR3 RAM with it, which will be fine. The GPU though was for RENDERING to CREATE the stuff you SEE in the game not to 'play' the game. So yeah you could try and replace the GPU with say a 1050TI, but you have to make sure it 'fits' that specific case, the PSU (Power Supply) should be pretty nice for a CAD building PC like that.

I'd check with whoever sells the card you choose, like Asus/EVGA/etc if you go with a new Nvidia card. It might not work well with that old of a motherboard.

Quadro cards aren't meant for gaming and apparently that one is based on the GTX 480, which gives you an idea of how out of date it is. If the 1050 Ti doesn't work out I'd probably go with a used GTX 660. It's guaranteed to be compatible, uses one 6 pin connector, has 2gb vram, and is a decent gaming card for the cost.

Of course, with HP... you never know for sure.

But try the 4000 with some games and see what you think. At 1080p, it will not make you happy if you like to play with high settings. 720p and lower, you might find it is OK... at least for now.
