I have just done a fresh install of w8.1 using HP recover stick. This should return the 32 G SSD to factory original. It re-formats the SSD on the way. 11GB of my SSD is now taken up with a recovery area, and win 8,1 seems to occupy 14 of the remaining 20GB. Can I reduce this by removing unwanted rubbish that came with the install (unusable office for instance. pay money to use it). Which files are safe to remove~?.

No matter how much you remove, that 32GB drive is still very, very marginal.

The 11GB Recovery partition can probably be used to create your own USB version of that.
If so, do that and you can then use that 11GB space as well.

Removing Office for instance is very straight forward, simply use the remove program function in the settings app. You can also check for programmes that you will never use. Also download and run Ccleaner, that should remove a big chunk of useless registry entries and general temporary files from the HDD.
