I have a dell optiplex 980 sff core i5 650 8gb ram and 235 psu and a GeForce 730 i want a better and faster CPU for gaming and I don't know what one will fit and go to my pc

Solution
Don't upgrade.

Your PC is simply too old to make any upgrade worthwhile. Your PC is 7 (not 9) years old. 7 years and it is time to consider a full-replacement. Upgrading such an old PC is not going to get you much. You have a SFF case which limits upgrades in several ways. There is physically very little room and the included powersupply won't support much (a 235watt PSU is below the minimum requirement for almost everything). Even if you found a socket 1156 CPU (this is the type your PC uses) which was faster , then there would be problems with the BIOS needing updating, and maybe your PSU not being powerful enough to support it. Socket 1156 CPUs are now hard to get unless you want a pull (used) one. They are a little costly...

You would gain a MUCH larger performance gain in gaming by upgrading the gpu first, the GT 730 is a slug. To answer your question one of the 1st gen i7 9xx processors would be your only real upgrade path for cpu, but I would really recommend you start saving up for a new computer rather than upgrade the cpu in that thing, its a 9 year old system.

your mainboard only accpets the basic models form generation 1 intel lga 1156 cpu socket

this limits you to old and somewhat expensive cpus that might or might not offer you more

also is possible that the psu and the mainboard can't handle a bigger cpu, in termps of power consumption and heat generated

from this old post from dell forums

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/19487348

i7-975 3.33 GHz
i7-965 3.20 GHz
i7-950 3.06 GHz
i7-940 2.93 GHz
i7-920 2.66 GHz
i7-870 2.93 GHz
i7-860 2.80 GHz
i7-860s 2.53 GHz

the faster the better but you need a new cooler, the one that the i5 uses will not be enough, is a complicated situation for this sff pc, it is not ideal in terms of heat and custom coolers

the gt 730 is your biggest limiting factor i think, you should consider selling it and go for a gt 1030, is at least 3 times better, is like a gaming gpu but on a very tight power budget, should work even better than your gt 730 and that psu

Socket 1156 CPUs are now hard to get unless you want a pull (used) one. They are a little costly and not a long term answer. For example, go to amazon and look for 1156 CPUs. If you filter out the used one, they run around 300 or so for a mediocre upgrade.

If you must upgrade, consider a graphics card upgrade such as the 750ti ot better still a 1050ti. You would need the SFF version (Low Profile) and you would be best off to not get an overclocked one as the PSU won't support much. Also make sure the one you get does not require auxiliary power, again due to your PSU.

Or consider a new PC.

700 to 800 gets you a nice new (entry level) gaming PC.

those 2 gpus are great but expensive in sff form

the 1030 is almost 90% guarateed to come in sff format, with the exception of a model which has a really big wide fan and heatsink

as bjornl says, is a bet where you can easily loose alot of time and money, updrade the cpu of a old sff pc is complicated

i would just upgrade gpu and think on a new pc soon

You can fine I7 870's at reasonable prices used on EBAY.

They run at 3.2 GHz Turbo boost on all cores.
