Is my i7 4790k running too hot? (Crackling Audio too)

I have recently noticed that my CPU (4790k) seems to be running a lot hotter than what I can remember. I am using Core Temp to monitor my CPU temps and it is saying that all cores are running at around 86-96c on 5-10% load. I thought this was unusual considering I have the Corsair H110i Liquid Cooler. I have recently gotten back from travelling for a few months only to be greeted by initially, crackling audio. I tried investigating further to see if I could fix the issue (I updated nvidia drivers, realtek audio drivers, mobo drivers) I even switched around my RAM slots. But I still get the audio problem and high CPU temps. Could it be that I need to replace the thermal paste or maybe I need to update my BIOS? I have had this build for about 2 years now. Hopefully this information will suffice. Thanks.

MoBo: MSI Z97 Gaming 7
GPU: MSI GTX 970
CPU: Intel i7 4790k
RAM: 16gb G.skill
PSU: Corsair RM850

Here's a screenshot of my reading from core temp:

with Corsair H110i Liquid Cooler my i74790k runs at 60c even on load
These could be the reasons

1. May be the processer and cooler are not in contact (loose contact)

2. Driedout thermal past

3. May be cooler issues

The H110i should run a few C hotter than the better air coolers (i.e. Noctua NH-D15, Cryorig R1)...

Things that could be wrong ....

-You installed fans backwards ... according to Corsair, fans should blow in.
-Mount was bad / thermal paste not prperly spread
-New the pump delivers about 1/10th the flow that a custom loop pump will provide, if performance is impaired in any way, will have big impact.
-How are pump / fan speeds being controlled / Are they operating at desired speeds ?
-Fans / rads / filters clogged with dust
-Adequate case air flow
-Is negative pressure sucking all your hot GFX card and CPU exhaust ?

The cooler seemed to be working fine before I went travelling. The PC hasn't been turned on in about 5 months so I don't know if the fact it has been sitting idle for so long is one of the reasons. Will have to check if I have any extra thermal paste lying around. If the thermal paste isn't the issue will look into the cooler. So is it unlikely that a driver is causing this issue? Just wanted to cross all my t's and dot all i's.

dirt inside the pump can make it refuse to work, but one of the reasons to use a closed watercooler solution is avoid those problems

can you hear the pump? can you detect its noise to confirm it is working

5 months is a long time for a pump not to work, but a closed loop pump has its benefits, i would clean thermal paste and apply more, are the fans on the radiator working properly? if it hasn't been in use, it is clean, right? just to be sure, clean the pc and the radiator, check how fans are doing

I'm not sure if i can hear the pump over all my fans. However, there is a lot of vibration in the two water pipes leading to the CPU could this be a sign that the liquid cooling is still flowing? I am not sure when this problem occurred exactly. It could have been at any point in those 5 months. Wasn't sure if stagnant hardware can naturally develop problems over time. My first step will be to replace the thermal paste and go from there. Will keep this post updated. :)

Okay I might have to send back the cooler as reapplying the thermal paste didnt seem to change the results. it's actually quite worrying as my temps on all cores are reaching 100c. OCCT is saying that the CPU has a -80% overclock (from 4000mhz down to 800 mhz) maybe this explains the popping audio and just generally slow performance of the PC? I have no idea how it could have gotten this bad...

Was told by corsair to connect Pump to a SATA to molex adapter and/or replace thermal paste. Tried these and still no joy. I'm sending the cooler back. Hopefully this will fix the problem. If not, then it might well be the motherboard. Do you think clearing the CMOS may help?

This PC seems to be getting weirder and weirder. I have now looked into MSI command center and its telling me that System fan 1, 2 and 3 are all running at 0 RPM. This cant be right though as I can physically see the fans moving. I'm getting the cooler sent back today but I have a feeling it might not be the culprit. Only time will tell though. The annoying thing is this seems like it wont be a quick fix unfortunately.
