I am a first time builder so I'm kinda clueless. I got thermal paste on the back of my CPU ( I think that's normal) but I also got it on the side. Is this okay or is my CPU ruined. This happens brvuse I had a bit of trouble installing the CPU fan
It may spill onto the motherboard which may cause issues or if it gets into the CPU socket that would be a problem as the CPU wouldn't work correctly and it would be a nightmare to clean/fix.
Watch the language, this is a family friendly site. As far as the thermal paste it should be spread evenly (thin) over the top of the CPU and I would clean it off if it's on the side of the CPU. And no it shouldn't of damaged the CPU.

Thank you again. I also want to apologize again for my language.
Rubbing alcohol works good as a cleaning agent also try using the pea method when you reapply thermal past it should prevent the same thing from happening again.
Small, English garden pea, regular instant rice size dollup.
For cleaning 'the lid' and cpu cooler base use 75% or better isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and coffee filters.
For cleaning the bottom of the cpu, just use a terrycloth rag, no liquids, they are caustic (alcohol) and can soak into the pcb (That's the green part)
That's only for an Intel cpu. For amd cpus, you are SOL, those pins are impossible to clean due to their inherent fragility and ease of bending.
