Sounds like it's probably your wireless driver then:

Go to your computer manufacturers website (E.g., Dell, HP etcetera) - do this on a different machine if need be ->
Enter your Service Tag or product ID or choose your computer model from an all products list (have a look on the bottom of your laptop for Service Tag/Product ID) ->
Select your installed operating system ->
Download both the Wireless and Ethernet network drivers and save them to your Desktop (or transfer them there if required) ->

This MAY also have something to do with the channel being used for your wireless - I.e., your wireless card in the laptop may only be capable of connecting to a 2.4GHz channel and the router MAY be set to broadcast on the 5GHz channel - worry about that if the fresh Network driver installs don't work for you.

One further point, if possible, set Windows Updates to "Check for Updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" instead of "Install Updates automatically (Recommended)" if that happens to be your current setting. Occasionally Windows will see fit to download a driver for your hardware which could actually cause more harm than good so you should only download drivers recommended for your product through the Manufacturers and/or component Manufacturers website (E.g., Dell, HP, Realtek, Intel etcetera etcetera).

If Windows does happen to produce a listing in Windows Update relating to any of the hardware devices inside the laptop I would advise you to right click the Update and choose to Hide - they might re-appear at times but be persistent with this or otherwise just leave them there, put up with the fact that Windows Update will report that there is an Update you don't want and don't install it.

Good luck :)
