There seems to be nothing in Google, my question is if this CPU can handle 4k playback smooth enough so I don't need a GPU. My Motherboard is capable of producing 4k @ 60 fps so its not a problem, movies are playing @ 24 fps anyway.
well, in theory, I know. Problem is, when I tried with i5 7500 and integrated graphics, movies were stuttering. So I was hoping for some real world answers.

that depends on a number of factors. a X265 HEVC 4k video requires considerably more cpu power than a x264 video. if the bitrate of the film is more, which increases the pcture quality and adds more stress to cpu, like stuttering or pixellating, when u fast seek like ctrl+> or shift+> in VLC. a faster storage medium can also help in that case.
but for a normal playback even for a x265 4k video, the i5 should do fine. try updating ur VLC if its not uptodate in that case.
