Right now I have a i7 4790k and a MSI 1070 gaming x. My friend is parting out his i5 7600k and Zotac 1080 Mini. He would sell me the CPU and GPU for $650 which is a great deal. I was thinking of upgrading but is it worth going from the 4790k to the 7600k?

Solution
What on earth are you talking about? The i5-7600 has 4 cores and 4 threads and has a 4.2ghz clock. The 4790K is clocked at 4.0ghz and boost clock to 4.4ghz. If he has a Z-motherboard, he can even overclock it...so again, it's a DOWNGRADE. Not to mention he has to get ANOTJHER motherboard, and DIFFERENT RAM...so he would have to spend more.
No..you will be downgrading going to the i5 from that i7..even if it is a new generation. Not to mention, you still have to update your motherboard and get new RAM. However, that 1080 Mini is a steal..and under the right conditions can max out any game on 1440p. How about you either negotiate just for the GPU or take the deal and re-sell the CPU?

but still the cpu that he has is 4/8
so hes technically upgrading not downgrading

I don't plan on overclocking (Im not that tech savy to not mess everything up trying to). I wouldnt be too upset in upgrading ram since Im a little behind on the ram with the ddr3 i have now. But without overclocking how much of a step up/down is the 6700k from the 4790k?

Are you getting the i7-6700K or i5-7600K? There is a different. If you are getting the 6700K, hop on that thing like white on rice. Yes you will need a new motherboard and DDR4 RAM, but it would be worth it and you can still use a B250.

If you talking about the i5(five)-7600K it does have some upgrades, but you still lose those threads that games are starting to utilize now. Not to mention, if you do multi-tasking, you may see some decrease in performance as well.

Sorry the 7600k. So the I5. Everywhere I read most games don't use the extra threads on an i7. That i7 is more for video editing and CAD programs. Also, what is b250?

B250 is a motherboard which can be had for under $70 new. Even if games don't use the extra threads, wouldn't that just mean the i5 and is on the same level of the i7? Again, I would keep it, and this is jsut my recommend. If you want to upgrade everything else, then go ahead. It would jsut be more work for you to do. Also, you would have to re-install Windows, which means data could be lost.
